The biotech company BRAIN has been chosen as the winner of the 2013 EUROPEAN BIOTECHNICA AWARD. At the Opening Ceremony for the 2013 edition of BIOTECHNICA - Europe's No. 1 event for biotechnology, the life sciences and laboratory technology - on Monday evening in Hannover BRAIN was honoured by Olaf Lies (Economics Minister for the State of Lower Saxony), Dr. Frank Mathias (Chairman of the vfa biotech association and CEO of MediGene), Harald Borrmann (Executive Director, Roche Diagnostics), and Dr. Jochen Köckler (Member of the Managing Board, Deutsche Messe).

The EUROPEAN BIOTECHNICA AWARD has been presented regularly since 2003 and ranks as one of the most prestigious prizes for biotech companies in Europe. This year the competition called for submissions by European companies furthering the use of biotechnology in industrial applications. In selecting and evaluating the companies, particular attention was paid to real-world industrial realisation and market-ready products.

"BRAIN stands out for its longstanding, exceptional performance in biologising industries and establishing a bioeconomy via a unique and complex network of international partners along the entire value creation chain," says Dr. Karsten Henco, Chairman of the international jury. "BRAIN thus perfectly fulfills the challenge criteria for this year's award and exhibits a successfully expanding business model."

Based in the Zwingenberg region of Hessen, BRAIN has helped advance biological solutions from "nature's toolbox" for numerous processes as well as intermediate and end products for partner companies, in more than 100 cooperative research and development efforts with industry partners in the chemical, consumer goods, pharmaceutical and food industries.

Since 2010, BRAIN has also been developing and marketing its own products for end customers. Companies with complementary expertise have teamed up with BRAIN in this process. "We are delighted at having been chosen as the winners of the 2013 EUROPEAN BIOTECHNICA AWARD," said Dr. Holger Zinke, Founder and Executive Board Chairperson of BRAIN AG. "This recognises the pioneering work accomplished by the entire BRAIN team over the past 20 years and gives us added motivation to continue down our chosen path towards the bioeconomy, together with our partners and with our sights set on sustainability."
